ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BEN
Terengganu, 12 Aug- The Faculty of Languages and Communication Student Society (FALCOM) had organized a talk session called ‘All You Need to Know About BEN’. The talk was held at 10 am on 12 August 2021 via Facebook Live on FALCOM’s official Facebook page. The talk was an effort to promote and introduce the new students and future students that will enroll in the BEN program.
Around thirty students have attended the talk, which mainly involves the students from BEN and students currently applying through the UPU system. The moderator for this talk is FALCOM’S president, Syahmi Haikal, and the guest is Dr. Nor Azikin, Head of The English Language Centre of FBK. The moderator had asked a few questions that students and parents alike commonly ask.
The first question is a common question of “What is BEN?”. Dr. Azikin answered that BEN is an acronym for Bachelor of English Language with Communication. The 4-year program was introduced in 2005 and was known as the only program in Malaysia that offered both English and Communication in one program in a public university.
The second question is about the courses offered by the program, and Dr. Azikin mentioned that it covered both English and Communication subjects. For example, the subjects of English, Introduction to History of English Language, Morphology and Syntax. There are also other subjects such as Introduction to Translation, Public Speaking, Multimedia English, and Research Methodology. As for the Communication subjects, there are Human Communication and Strategic Communication Planning. Dr. Azikin listed the requirements for the students to enroll in this program to answer the third question. The requirements are at least MUET Band 4, minimum of B+ for English in SPM, minimum of any subject with B in SPM, and CGPA of 2.75 or above for STPM, Matriculation, and Diploma students.
Next, she stated the benefits and the profession that you can hold after graduating. Most of the alumni became lecturers of English subjects, and some became Public Relation officers and Content Creators. There are also some students that became translators, journalists and entrepreneurs while some work with a publishing company. With the courses offered in this program, students can go anywhere, even to work with some of the event management companies. Dr. Azikin further mentioned that one would not learn about grammar nor compulsory to be fluent in English for this program. This program also does not offer journalism or mass communication subjects, but the students are encouraged to venture outside the program’s field.
The talk ended with Dr. Azikin encouraging future students and BEN students to venture into the mass communication field if they would like to challenge themselves.
