ONLINE SPEAKER’S CORNER: SPEAKER’S EDGE
Kuala Nerus, 27th May: The Faculty of Languages and Communication Student Society (FALCOM) has jointly organized a program called Student's Edge with the Arabian Language Unit (UBA), Al-Qalam, English Language Society (ELS), and the Student Language Editorial Association (STELA). The program was held virtually via Google Meet at 5pm on 27 May 2021, attended by around thirty-five students involving students from BEN and BAS.
The program, formerly known as Student's Corner, was an effort to train the students to be confident in public speaking. The program started with the host, Mr. Ahmad Azhan gave a greeting, then followed by speeches from six participants, who are the representatives from BEN and BAS.
The first speaker is Mr. Ariff Hakimi from BEN with his title 'You Do You.' In his speech, he spoke on how most of the society are missing the best part of their lives, cherishing everything that makes them happy, and made an analogy of tasting a savory dish every single bite of it. Besides, he emphasized that failure does not mean the end of the world as life is a never-ending learning process.
Another speaker on that day is Mr. Tengku Ahmad Faris, with his speech entitled 'Stop Normalizing Sexual Jokes,' one issue that happened last April. In his remarks, he was firmly against the act of making sexual and rape jokes as it is a crime. Instead of letting people laugh at these jokes or look away in unease, one should be encouraged to voice out so that these jokes can be put to a halt. Also, Mr. Faris stated that sexual harassment is not only applied to women but men too. Lastly, he stressed that jokes are supposed to be funny, not to be uncomfortable.
The remarkable program held by FALCOM with its collaborations ended around 6.10 pm. "We hope that the sharing by our superb speakers gives us a new knowledge and develops our critical thinking," was what the host, Mr. Ahmad Azhan, said at the end of the program. The program received positive feedback from all the attendees as they gain new knowledge and awareness, and the event ended successfully.
