By: Hanin Izzati, Nur Hafizah & Ain Manan – 8th April 2021

On 26th March 2021, an online event called “Moo”-Ving Chinese New Year was put into action by the Chinese Culture and Arts Society (PKKC), with the chairman of the event itself being none other than Ng Wei Hann, the President of S.T.E.L.A., and the President of PKKC as well. A number of students of UniSZA and several other universities were involved in this online event. It was made with a few objectives in mind such as to expose and provide an opportunity for the students to celebrate Chinese New Year with a little twist that came in the form of online games and activities. It was also a get-together that allowed students from various universities to mingle in the fun and celebrate the sacred event online together.
The event was lively and energetic with the students’ active participation in the activities. It started with a showing of a CNY-themed performance Music Video by the committee members of PKKC which particularly received loud cheers and full interest from the participants. Other noteworthy activities included games of guessing. ‘Guess the Song’ was where they need to guess songs of various languages, including CNY songs, and ‘Guess the Word’ was where they need to guess the animals from their ancient Chinese drawings. Quizzes based on two CNY-themed videos were conducted too. Not to mention, the Lucky Red Packets, a CNY-themed lucky draw session was carried out, choosing 5 lucky winners to win an RM8-cash digital red packet each. Needless to say, the activities and games were well-thought-out and well-acted upon which kept the participants on the edge of their seats and wanting for more.

Fellow BEN students, Izyan Najat (BEN 6) and Nuraisyah Ain (BEN 6) joined the online event, as they were interested to learn about Chinese New Year and Chinese Culture. Despite not winning any prizes, they stated that it was a great and memorable experience for them as they were able to meet new people, and having fun despite their busy schedules. “I feel good because I was able to broaden my circle with other people from different races and other universities. Being able to share our thoughts, enhance good teamwork although we didn’t really know each other and also learning new things about other cultures!” – (Izyan Najat, BEN 6)

The event was held successfully throughout the night even though some hurdles need to be faced by the organizers and maybe for some participants. The event also received a lot of positive feedback, especially from the participants. Some of them also hoped that there will be more events like this as it helps to broaden the circles among different races even though by using online platforms, and helps to strengthen the bond between the participants as everyone is not able to meet and have their festive celebrations physically yet. Hence, this event proves that any merry festive celebration like Chinese New Year can actually be done online, and as successful and enjoyable as the physical celebrations themselves.
