MOHE ELCA PROGRAMME WESTERN DIKIR COMPETITION SEES UNISZA SECURING THIRD PLACE
Terengganu, 25 September - The Faculty of Languages and Communication (FBK) organised an inter-versity event called Higher Education English Language (HE ELCA) Carnival last 25th and 26th of September in Dewan Al-Muktafi Billah Shah, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) working together with Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). According to one of the organisers and lecturer in UniSZA, Mr. Shahzool, HE ELCA was initiated as a programme that provides an exposure and gives awareness for the university students on the various easy ways of learning, acquiring and using English Language in daily interactions.
The objective of the programme was to embark the spirit of using English in daily communication without feeling embarassed as it is pivotal language in every field in the world. Hence, a minimal exposure like HE ELCA aims to make students comfortable in communicating using the language as a whole. “This programme turned out good but needs more days for the participants to be given in depth exposure of the language. The passion to learn and use English can be embedded better if we could allocate five to six days for the facilitators of the programme to guide the participants better” , Mr.Shahzool said in an interview last week.
The programme ended with Western Dikir Competition which was participated by six universities around Malaysia namely Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia and so on. Western Dikir is a variant of Dikir Barat but uses English lyrics. UniSZA managed to secure a remarkable third place with UUM reigning as the champion. One of the participants from UUM named Putri had shared her experience. Expressing her gratitude to her lecturers and fellow teammates for winning the title. According to her, the benefit of the programme was that beyond learning English, she made many new friends from different universities, forging a good bond with others despite coming from different backgrounds. “This programme should be continued in the future because it is definitely fun and a good venture for university students”. Putri shared her thoughts.
